MUSKIES ON CAMPUS
Friday, May 9
Six Muskies are completing their college seasons and will soon reinforce the Muskies lineup. Congrats to all of them on fine spring seasons.

Yesterday, two Muskie pitchers excelled for their college teams, winning games in their respective conference tournaments.

Casey Allar, a junior at Bemidji State University, pitched the Beavers to a 5-2 victory over Upper Iowa University. The BSU website says:

WAYNE, Neb. (Pete Chapman Complex) -- Bemidji State used a strong pitching performance from Casey Allar (Jr., Sartell, Minn.) to upset the No. 2 seed Upper Iowa Peacocks, 5-2, in the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) tournament today in Wayne, Neb. The win for the Beavers is just the third win in the NSIC tournament all-time and the first in tournament play since the 1997 season.

After allowing a run in the bottom of the first inning Allar found his comfort zone keeping the Peacock batters off balance through eight solid innings. Allar scattered eight Upper Iowa hits allowing two runs (both earned) with five strikeouts with just two walks to improve his record to 5-2 on the season.

For the college season, Allar is 5-2 with a 5.02 ERA in 8 starts. Last season for the Muskies, Allar posted 2.25 ERA over 52 innings. He had a 4-1 record, with 2 saves.

St. Cloud State pitcher David Deminsky also won a conference tournament game yesterday. He pitched a complete game against the Univ. of North Dakota. The SCSU website says:

Omaha, Neb. - Nate Hammes went 3-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base to lead St. Cloud State (25-21-1) to an 8-4 victory over North Dakota (13-22) in the first round of the NCC Tournament at Seymour Smith Field Thursday afternoon.

"All-around we had solid pitching and defense, and that combination is always a good recipe for victories," said assistant coach Jason Brueske.

David Deminsky (Sartell) went the full nine innings for the Huskies, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits. The victory moved Deminsky's record to 4-3 on the season.

On the way to that 4-3 record, Deminsky has posted a stellar 55/9 K/BB ratio in 59 innings of work.

Muskies centerfielder Dan Gaughan is also playing for SCSU this season. He started 37 games for the Huskies in 2007, batting .277. A slow start this season has led to less playing time, and thus little chance to improve his .178 average. Good thinking Danny! Save those hits for the summer!!

Gaughan hit an even .400 for the Muskies last season.

Jake Sweeter is a sophomore first baseman for the University of St. Thomas JV squad. No stats are available for the JV season. Sweeter will be rookie Muskie this season.

Infielder Michael Carlson had an excellent freshman season at Concordia College. He started 21 games and hit .306. Carlson has finished his college season and will make his Muskies debut in tonight's game.

The final "college player" is outfielder Nathan Strenge. In the Bo Jackson tradition, Nate joined the Augustana (SD) tennis team this season despite never playing organized tennis previously. He posted a 3-10 record playing #6 singles, but will return to baseball action this summer.

TEAMS, SCHEDULE SET FOR OMMAN INSURANCE INVITATIONAL
Monday, March 31

The 2nd annual Omman Insurance Invitational will be larger - and arguably better - than the first. The Muskies won the tournament last year, but face a steep challenge to repeat as champions.

The 2008 tournament will expand to 8 teams, with the St. Stephen Steves joining Sartell as tournament co-hosts. The tournament will be held June 6-8 at St. Stephen and Sartell’s Champion Field. Click here to see the complete bracket and schedule.

Together, the Steves and Muskies were able to recruit an outstanding field of teams to the tournament. All 6 teams entering the tournament made the state ‘C’ tournament last season. Combined with St. Stephen, who advanced to the final 8 last year, 7 of 8 teams were state tournament qualifiers last season.

Sartell, the only team who did not make state last year, qualified for the 2006 state tournament.

The full list of tournament teams is below. St. Stephen will open the tournament on Friday night at Sartell, playing St. Martin under the lights in Sartell. Sartell’s first game is at Noon Saturday against an excellent Elko Express squad. That game is also in Sartell.

Second baseman Brian Schellinger batted .343 and stroked a team high 10 doubles. Infielders Chris Feneis (.327) and Ryan Bottini (.307) also produced high batting averages, while rookie Jim Gabrielson hit 3 home runs.
